So I had an older gentleman come to my office today asking for help. He said he remembered me from a BI instructional I had taught and wanted me to help him with his research. He was doing a paper on diversity in the workforce and wanted to know what databases to use, and how to get the citations from the articles he finds. I had him log in on a computer and took him to our library home page and from there showed him the best databases to use in which he might get something on his topic. I also had him create an Ebsco account so he could save his articles and get to them from work, since it did not seem like he was going to stay long and I did not want him to lose his work. I also provided him with some different options on how to save/copy his citations to a reference page.
It was nice to be approached by someone that remembered me :) And he had written my name and contact information down! [so i know he was legit]heh. Before he left, I gave him my business card and let him know he could contact me any time he needed help.
Thank you sir for cheering me up! :)

I was helpful!
So I just got a call from a student that was having a hard time finding a full-text article about deer population control; she said she had been trying for some time and was not able to find anything. So I did the search with her (me on my end and her on hers) and I was able to walk her through steps on which databases to use and how to get to the articles, We found some that were helpful to her!! :D It felt really good...because she called and I could tell she was frustrated even though she was trying to be nice and control herself. It is moments like this that makes all the sleepless nights and information overload from classes worth it :) because soon this is what I will get to do on a daily basis.

Faculty/Staff Meeting!!
So my life long dream of sitting around a meeting table, drinking coffee, saying 'good good' has been accomplished!! heh, ok so its not that dramatic :) Today we had our faculty/staff meeting and it is always surreal to be part of one for me. I never imagined that I would finally get this far! Participating in budget meetings and planning company events! And yet that is what I did today. The library here at NSU-BA is going to have a thanksgiving potluck lunch and THEN a christmas secret santa/desert potluck. *sigh* The holidays are good.

Another Teaching Session!
I do believe I am getting better and more confident with my instructional sessions. Today I had another session I co-taught with for a Reading class. They were future teachers or maybe even librarians who would be in charge of buying class books and building the library collection. The librarian I co-taught with covered the TitleWave database and I covered on how to find books in our catalog and how to request them through ILL if needed.

Copy Cataloging and Class!
So yesterday, 10-28-2013, was a busy but fun day. I started the day off with training from a librarian that came down from Tahlequah. She trained me on doing copy cataloging using OCLC Connexion. That was fun and will help me develop more experience so hopefully I will have a better chance of finding a cataloging/acquisitions position when I am done with school.
Later in the evening, Dr. Louderback, library director, asked me if I wanted to help her with an instructional session for Organizational Leadership students. I feel that this time, the session went much better than last time. They could tell I was nervous, but I feel that I handled it much better than before. I went over the basic book searches from our library catalog, how to request items through ILL, and provided them with citing sources and information about our Writing Center.

Small but...
So this is not really a wooohoo huge responsibility, but I thought it was interesting and as I progress in my career I know I will be handling more situations such as these. We had a patron come into the library looking for a job. We currently do not have anything open, so my Director asked me to email her back and just mention that we do not have anything available, but if she is interested she can periodically check on the status and check the NSU website as well for posted openings. This in a way gets my name out there to students and others so they can associate me and the library :)

Save the Books!!
On Friday, 09-27-13, we had a slight leak emergency in the library...Again! The ceiling on top of the books started dripping water so we had to hurry and put a sheet over all the stacks so the books would not get ruined. This is the second time this has happened to us. I believe I will start on that reading list I got from the Collections Care conference that might help me know what to do and how to save books in case of another incident.
(sorry for the sideways look, even though i saved it the correct way, when i uploaded it here it went sideways and i cant figure out how to make it normal)

I Forgot to Breathe!
I do not feel that the BI session went too well today :( Last time it was a bunch of high school/tcc english comp students, but this time they were Library School Media students...and I do not think i was prepared enough to discuss the databases that i did. I hardly remember anything, its all blurry but i remember randomness and no real direction. Tom is always telling me "remember to breathe" and "do not talk to yourself" .. but i think i forgot. Oh well! practice makes perfect and i am sure that next time i will do better.

Welcome 5633 and anybody else seeing this :)
I created this blog, one, for class purposes and two, to keep a diary of sorts of my experiences working at the library and other life experiences I go through while finishing up my program at OU-Tulsa.
I will soon have one new experience to discuss! :) on the 16th I will be co-teaching an instructional session with Pamela Louderback. I shall keep everyone posted on how I survive that, if i do :)
